VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND CULTURAL MEANING 2 (Part 1) TASK 3 : Semiotic Theory

Semiotic Theory

Semiotic theory is study of signs and sign processes. It is related to the field of linguistics based on studies the structure and meaning of language more specifically.

The meaning of sign is anything that can be seen which contains ‘meaning’, it is seeing by eyes. Moreover, it must to have the meaning for sure and agreement from society. The sign it is related to the ‘Concrete’ and ‘Abstract’.

Concrete is the thing s or object that we can see and everything is fixing. That was a fact that cannot be change or using imagination of mind.

Abstract it is though in human’s mind. It was what people think on their mind by come from preview knowledge/experience.

Example:

From the picture above, everyone will know that it is a toilet signboard. It was agree from society no matter in which countries. This is ‘ concrete’ because that was a fact.
When people look at this, they automatically know that it is a place can be wash the hand, for pee, provide tissue inside the toilet, and so on. It is ‘Abstract’ because that is what people think on their mind by come from preview knowledge/experience.

Vertical Studio

A studio is independent for our life; it is for students to study. Everyone is learning knowledge/ get the knowledge from here. It’s a place that you can know a lot of friends with different cultural, share ideas or discuss assignment here. Every student has their own space (work desk) to do their work, some of them will do the freelance, and some of them will watch the movie in the lunch time. Everyone busy their work including lecturer. They share their knowledge/experience in the studio, teaching or training students to become perfect for their future.

There have stuck an attendance paper in the studio because ‘time’ is very important for everyone. It is about self-discipline. A good discipline student will come on time and work on time for sure, but most of the students here are always late because it is ‘student cultural’. Moreover, when students come to the studio, the first thing everyone will do is put down the bag then open the laptop. After that sit in front of the laptop for few hours to do the assignment, watch movie, listen to the song, or chatting with friends by using QQ, Skype, MSN, or Facebook.

The color of the studio is white because it can make the space to look wider, when people stick anything like the paper on the wall then everyone can easy to see and read it. Some of students stick their drawing on the wall, some of students stick some writing on the wall, and some of lecturer put the light ball near the wall to make the studio look nicer.

A studio is not only for students to study but you can do anything from here. A white table that not only can put a book or paper, but you can decorate it to look different with others. Moreover, you can also buy some snack, drink, and have a movie time at here as well. This is our vertical studio. Besides that, the table in the studio is joined as you can see on the picture, one table can be sit by 2 person because we have a lot of student in the studio and it can easy to communicate with each other, sharing ,and more space to study/work.

Studio is just like an office, every day we have to come on time. Lecturer and students sit in a same studio because we can communicate, meeting, and discuss something easily. Communication is quite important to everyone; we can improve our language and let people understand what we try to say at the same time. This we called a ‘studio’.

Working horse

A working horse carries too much thing in a poor country. In fact, working horses are crucial to the livelihood for them. They use horses as a transport and working animals. Everyday horses have to work under the hot sun, from morning until night maybe with a little rest. The work they have to do every day is plough field, carry people or carry goods. It’s quite pity but not willful cruelty, it just because this come from poverty. Not only animals have to work so hard but even people also the same.

People in poor countries may don’t have enough knowledge or money because all of them are facing a same problem which is poverty. So, it’s not their fault to use the animals as a transport and working animals or buy basic medical treatment for their animals. The reality and cruel of the society make everyone have to accept the truth, they don’t have a chance to change their life.

The differences between Rich and Poor Countries

More economically developed countries are richer. The countries make more money than poor countries, so people who live in the countries have more money to spend on health, education, food, and luxuries too. Most of them are Apple followers, pursuit of fashion, would like to buy the thing are more quality.

For poor countries, it’s totally different as you can see on the picture. Less economically developed make the countries poorer. People who live in the countries have no enough money to spend on health, education, food, and they often grow their own food to feed themselves, their families, and their animals too. Food is the most important thing for them that is why they work hard and busy every day with their working horse.

The picture tells us the difference between rich and poor countries. We should not always complaint our life not good enough than others because the people who live in poor countries are harder than us for sure. The horse in our countries is very precious, they stay in racecourse and take care by human, but in poor countries they are just normal as a working animal.
