What does meaning of "Cabinets of curiosities" ?

"Cabinet of curiosities also known as the "wunderkammer" [wonder-room] were encyclopedic the collections of types pf objects whose categorical boundaries were, in renaissance Europe, yet to be defined. Curiosities became popular use starting in 15th century in Renaissance Europe. In German they called it "kunstkammer" [art-room] was first time used to describe these collection or wonderkammer (wonder-room). And from Italian they called it "Gabineno".

The " Cabinets of curiosities was originally a personal collection of thing of wonder the cabinet were also referred to as wunderkammer. The cabinet popularity in the 17th century. Some of them collection of individual, wealthy owners and contained both natural and so on.

Cabinet of curiosities a melange of weird and that the menageries sometimes included a human being as well as animals. For all the times and place, natural curiosities is considered to be work of art from the hand of the creators.

Cabinet of curiosities or wunderkanmmer mixed collections of strange, wonderful, rate and curious object designed to create something. Cabinet of curiosities is the precursors of early museum, whatever the collector found out interesting.

The originally rooms filled with all type of objects from nature, antiquity, and so on.   All of these object would been classified as belonging to natural history, religion, work of art antiquities and so on.  Eventually, all of these collections Will be stored in elaborately modeled cabinets, full of drawers and shelves of different sizes and shapes

In italian naturalists ulisse Aldrovandi are the one of earliest ans the most impressive cabinets. The main function of the cabinet was to provoke a sense of curiosity and wonder in the viewer. The cabinets displayed their owners’ notions of Art (man-made artefacts), Science (natural artefacts) and Spirituality (sense of wonder at God’s works) in a physical form.

Renaissance type of collection are not evolve to the modern museum and so astonishing because it was dispersed; its sole relation to present-day collections is that certain of its ‘rarities’. Eventually found their way into our museum or museum departments.

Circuit of Culture

Circuit Of culture.

The 5 interlinked “moments” at which culture is meaningful:

-          - Representation
-          - Identity
-          - Production
-          - Consumption
-          - Regulation

The five moments in the ‘circuit of culture’ can be related to the process between relationships and how people understand other cultures. The way culture is represented effects how it is identified. The understanding of different virtual school bags and cultures is useful in broadening knowledge and will expand their thinking and ideas of the world and all known cultures, education, lifestyles and ancestry.
Paul Du Gay, Stuart Hall, Linda Janes. Hugh Mackey and Keith Negus. Doing Cultural studies. The story of Sony Walkman London, sage/the open university, 1997.

REPRESENTATION

Representation meaning from language, painting, photography and other media, it uses “signs and symbols to represent or re-present whatever exists in the world in terms of a meaningful idea and concept, image". How to convey a sense, through the various aspects of how to present artifact. . Representation mean using language to say something meaningful about or represent to other people. Representation is the discursive process by which cultural meaning is generated and given shape: “we give things meaning by how we represent them”

IDENTITY

Identity meaning is constructed or made and internalized by the individual person or cultural group when confronted with a text.

PRODUCTION

Production refers to the effort that an entity such as an individual, culture or industry goes about representing itself, or how to make it the product. This takes the form of an individual’s personal production of their image through activities.

CONSUMPTION

People, industry and groups strive to have their identity consumed, in the manner designed by their production. How the product is used and what and what kind of social context it is used. Often Consumption happens in very different contexts. When message are decoded by audiences, The audiences will give some comments or asking for question, and from the question we should know.

Example of question
1. What is produced?
2. How does the function?
3. What material?

They maybe other question or feedback from audiences. Because meaning does not reside in an object but in how that object is used

REGULATION

what are the rules and laws, guidelines, agreements formulated, and
how are they monitored or controlled, e.g. the visual identity. Yon describes how perceptions of disapproval from others presents significant forces of regulation in the formation of a person’s identity. This indicates that as long as the observed behavior is pleasing to the individual or group, it is accepted as appropriate. If the behavior makes one uncomfortable, it becomes inappropriate. The approval or disapproval of texts may be in the hands of individuals or groups within a cultural setting.

In group had five person, each student need Choose one word to present it and write down what's the meaning and related with the installation art.

1. Representation [san san]
2. Identity [Ifti]
3. Production [Desmond]
4. Consumption [Thurga]
5. Regulation [Sharmila]

For my part is "Representation"

Representation meaning come from Photography, language, painting, and other media, which use “sign and symbols to represent or re-present whatever exits in the world in term of a meaningful concept, image or idea”.

For this project have three module subject combine together in one project. Therefore, student need to create one installation Art, the theme name called "NATURE". The material make sure is natural think, or we collect the five item from the beach can combine with the natural think to create installation design.

First, We have start meeting in group said about the final installation art, we have plan each person need to sketch out Five idea in paper. After that, meeting the second time each person to explain their own idea, util the end we selected the final idea. What we selected the idea and concept the mystifying what making art means and this is a playful and inventive way of exploring light shadows, reflection on wall. We using the private wood to create installation art.

Why we choose this idea?
Because for this idea want to let everyone can feel it the real nature, relax life and what we can see the wonderful life. Besides that, this idea want to make more interesting, unique, and attract people.

Identity

Once meaning is constructed, how is the product used to construct individual and group identity. Often created through the assertion of sameness and difference. Also reproduced through systems of representation and often incomplete. ¨Identity is derive from a multiplicity of sources--from nationality, ethnicity, social class, community, gender, sexuality sources which may conflict in the construction of identity positions and lead to contradictory fragmented identities. Identity gives us a location in the world and presents the link between us and the society in which we live.

Production

We using laser cutter machine to cutting our installation artwork. Firstly, we need to prepare plywood and cut it into eight pieces (600mm x 600mm). This is because our college department (AAVA) laser cutter machine can only support 600milimeter x 600 millimeter sizes. Plywood thickness is 3mm.

Our installation artwork hexagon lamp size (mm):-
¨Width: 470
¨Length: 540
¨Height: 420

Step by step:-
Step 1: We need to draw some sketches related with our theme.
Step 2: We need to trace those sketches into Adobe Illustrator.
Step 3: Design the hexagon lamp shape and size. Approximately the size is A3 size.
Step 4: Finalist the design shape and size.
Step 5: Edit those images into surface (420mm x 270mm).
Step 6: Friction plywood for more smooth.
Step 7: Check again and make sure nothing error.

Consumption

We selected the idea and concept what the way of exploring light shadows, reflection on wall. Our motive is want to show the value and important of lights and shadow. We choosing wood for do this installation art. The reason for we are chooses wood means it’s related to nature. In daily human being life lights is very important thing. Light is essential for life, provides and helps us to see the visual tasks. The importance of good lighting is unquestionable as lighting provides essential service to people in all places. Your shadow side is a very important part of human nature. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it to the shadow is the most reliable path to actualizing all of our human potential.

Regulation

The regulation of our installation art is related to nature. Lights and shadow is half part in human being life. Playing with the lights and shadows its make it more interesting. We are use three things for do this installation art.
-Wood
-Lights
-Layer cutting

Learning Outcome

For this semester what i was learning outcome is find out what does meaning of curiosities cabinet. Cabinet of curiosities is a collection of European encyclopedia absolute boundary objects. After that, what I understanding about this subject is the meaning of various names such as cabinets of wonder, and in Germany Kunstkammer or wonderkammer. What we collected from beach also need to explain it. Besides that, we need to research again what meaning of "the Circuit of Culture". it is something that is learned about a thing. Circuit culture is a theory that is used in cultural studies. The 5 interlinked “moments” at which culture is meaningful representation, Identity, production, Consumption, and regulation. And this subject has taught us how to compile and organize for our installation art.
